I stumbled backwards, falling with an almighty thwap onto my bottom. It was him, the thing from the rooftop at Scarecrows that night, and Iâm sure Iâd seen the same eyes in the alleyway, with wings, and again now⦠Could it be? A gargoyle?
âGet up dear, itâs time to go now,â Maurice said, holding out his hand to help me up.
âI wouldnât do that, if I was you,â a deep male voice warned.
I pulled my hand back. The red eyes and figure had disappeared. What appeared from the fog, wasnât a monster at all, but a man. My mouth parted open.
He walked with flawless precision towards Maurice. Rough around the edges, but his beauty was so raw, so pure. With long brown hair, imperfectly straight; and enigmatic green irises. There was a hardness to him, like he was a warrior from another time, full of strength, and wisdom. Carrying the fierce scars of battle with every stride. His presence exuded a strength unlike any other. There was an inexplicable divinity about him.
I couldnât take my eyes off him.
âThere you are Grandpa, stop bothering this young lady, it is time to go home,â he said.
âDo not touch me,â Maurice hissed.
âI think itâs time that you went home, miss,â he said, glancing at me, but did a double take. His eyes pierced mine, narrowing, with a deep coldness.
I couldnât move. My heart thumping like the beat of a techno song. Pulse pounding in my ears. Across the top of my back a coldness settled, with a slight shiver.
His eyes ripped from mine back to Maurice. âTime to go, Grandpa.â
âTake your hands off me.â Maurice struggled beneath the restraint of the man.
They didnât look anything alike. It was seconds before Maurice gave up resisting. In a split second, his head whipped up.
My blood ran cold. Ice fucking cold. Trembling unconsciously. Unable to blink. Words stuck in my throat. Not even a gasp sounded. Shuffling backwards along the concrete on my bottom. Loose stones and grit pressing into my hands.
Two pits of pure nothing, evil and black, glared at me. A long-forked tongue slithered in and out of Mauriceâs mouth. Black scales covered his cheeks. âHe is coming for you,â he hissed at me. âI may have failed, but others will try, and my master, he will not fail.â
My stomach turned in knots, provoking a feeling of nausea.
âSilence,â the man restraining Maurice said.
On the cusp of a choked breath, a loud growl pierced the fog.
Glancing around, a ball lumped into my throat. Copious sweat covered me. The snout of a large black wolf appeared from the fog. Long, spiked fur, like a mohawk, ran from the top of its head to the tip of its tail. Its chest covered in whiteish fur. Lips curled back and fangs clenched. An angry growl sounded from deep within the wolfâs belly.
Its eyes met mine. My own breath strangled me.
The wolf, snarling and chomping, was focused only on me. Padding its paws closer, step by step, by step.
Fuck. This is it; Iâm going to die.
